The Forensic DNA Analysis section analyzes biological material found at a crime scene or associated with a criminal investigation. The section attempts to include or exclude potential suspects and/or victims as the source of the biological material. Analysts in this section perform the following functions on a regular basis:
The Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) blends computer and DNA technologies into an effective tool for fighting violent crime. The CODIS database houses DNA profiles of individuals collected in accordance with Louisiana law. The profiles can then be compared to DNA profiles collected from crime scenes. Matches can provide investigative leads, identify potential suspects, and help identify potential serial offenders. The system has three levels: local, state, and national.
