You may download an application to apply to become a State Trooper at the Louisiana State Police Commission (LSPC) website or by using the link below.

LSPC is responsible for the application and initial Cadet test. You can find the application, along with additional information, including a Cadet test preparation manual, on their website.

Cadet Testing


The Louisiana State Police Commission oversees the administration of exams. You can opt for online exams facilitated by ProctorU or choose to take in-person exams at LSPC's office.

In order to reserve an exam slot, it is necessary to submit an application beforehand.

APPLICATION PROCESS


The Louisiana State Police Applicant Process is a comprehensive and competitive procedure that may take approximately 4 months or longer, depending on budgetary considerations and the scheduling of the next Academy Class. 

Applicants not selected for hire may request to be placed back on the eligibility list by emailing Debbie Givens / [email protected] or Christy Cephus / [email protected], or by submitting a letter to the Louisiana State Police Commission (P.O. Box 66555, Baton Rouge, LA 70896-6555). 

Working with the applicant, our Recruiting and Background Units strive to ensure all steps are completed thoroughly and within the specified timeframes.  

 

  • Applicants submit an application to the Louisiana State Police Commission.
  • Once approved, applicants may take the entrance exam (free in person or online for a fee).

  • Pass/fail written assessment.
  • Results provided upon completion.
  • Successful applicants are notified by the State Police Commission. Unsuccessful applicants may reapply.
  • Retest date may be scheduled no sooner than 30 days from the previous test.
  • No more than three tests are allowed in any rolling 12-month period.

  • The Background Unit will request each applicant to update availability and complete the Personal Data Questionnaire once an academy class is scheduled.
  • Must be completed and returned within two weeks prior to scheduling Steps 4 and 5.

Applicants must pass a Physical Condition Assessment, including push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run. Standards are based on Cooper’s Standards for Law Enforcement Personnel.

  • Conducted after successful completion of the PCA.

  • Conducted for applicants who submitted the questionnaire.
  • Includes a scheduled polygraph exam.
  • May take several months to complete.

  • Applicant files are reviewed by the selection board.
  • Candidates are chosen in a fair, non-discriminatory manner.

  • Selected candidates receive a conditional offer letter.
  • Must be signed and returned by the specified deadline.

Includes a medical exam, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and a repeat physical assessment.

  • Issued upon successful completion of all evaluations.
  • Must be signed and returned by the deadline.

  • Candidates and their families are introduced to academy life and expectations, which include the following:

    • Introduction of the Louisiana State Police Senior Command Team,

    • Introduction of the Training Academy staff,

    • Expectations for each Cadet,

    • Introduction to family support systems,

    • Human Resources, and

    • A guided tour of the academy 

  • Final candidates receive reporting instructions and a list of required items.
