Unrestrained Driver Succumbs to Injuries in Terrebonne Parish Crash
Schriever – On January 16, 2023, shortly before 12:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop C was notified of a single-vehicle serious injury crash on Louisiana Highway 24 (West Main Street) near Dylan Ray Court. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 39-year-old Lee Babin of Houma.
The preliminary investigation revealed Babin, who was driving a 2006 BMW 650, was traveling south on LA Hwy 24 in the right lane at a high rate of speed. For reasons still under investigation, Babin quickly switched to the left lane in front of another vehicle before traveling onto the left shoulder. Babin attempted to return to the roadway by steering to the right, but overcorrected causing the BMW to rotate, cross both lanes of LA Hwy 24, and travel off the roadway to the right before striking a raised driveway.
Babin, who was not restrained, was ejected from the vehicle, suffered serious injuries, and was transported to an out-of-area hospital for treatment.
A toxicology sample was collected from Babin and submitted for analysis. Troop C was later notified Babin had succumbed to his injuries on January 17, 2023. This crash remains under investigation.
When a motorist speeds, they increase their chances of losing control, reduce their ability to react to and avoid a roadway hazard, and extend the distance necessary to stop a vehicle. Additionally, taking just 3 seconds to buckle up is your best defense for surviving a traffic crash. Always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. Every trip. Every time.
Troop C has investigated 2 fatal crashes resulting in 2 fatalities in 2023.
