Unidentified Pedestrian Killed in St. John Parish Crash

Laplace – On October 13, 2023, around 7:30 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on US 51 near Woodland Drive in St. John Parish. This crash claimed the life of an unidentified male pedestrian.

The initial investigation revealed a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling north on US 51 in the left lane. At the same time, the pedestrian began walking across the northbound lanes of US 51 and was impacted by the side mirror of the Chevrolet, causing him to fall to the ground. Shortly after, a 2018 Nissan Versa was traveling north on US 51 and impacted the pedestrian lying in the roadway. In the area of the crash, there are no designated crosswalks and lighting is limited. Additionally, the pedestrian was wearing dark-colored clothing at the time of the crash.

The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he died. The drivers of the Chevrolet and the Nissan were not injured in the crash.

Impairment is not suspected for either driver, however, both provided a voluntary blood sample for analysis. Impairment on the part of the pedestrian is unknown and routine toxicology tests are pending. This investigation is ongoing.

Pedestrians and motorists alike are urged to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety of pedestrians.
