Troopers Arrest Impaired Driver in Fatal St. Tammany Parish Crash

Covington – This morning, shortly before 1:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a fatal crash on LA Hwy 437 near North Fitzmorris Road in St. Tammany Parish. The crash claimed the life of 34-year-old Marlin Swaggerty of Covington.

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 54-year-old Warren Barringer of Hammond, was northbound on LA Hwy 437. At the same time, a motorcycle, driven by Swaggerty, was southbound on LA Hwy 437. For reasons still under investigation, the Chevrolet began to make a left turn onto North Fitzmorris Road and impacted the front of the motorcycle.  After impact, both vehicles traveled off the roadway.

Although wearing a DOT approved helmet, Swaggerty suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. Barringer was properly restrained and was uninjured. Barringer provided a breath sample that tested over the legal limit for alcohol. Troopers booked Barringer at the St. Tammany Parish Jail for violating L.R.S. 14:32.1 Vehicular Homicide, L.R.S. 14:98.1 DWI (1st Offense), and L.R.S. 32:122 Failure to Yield while Turning Left. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Swaggerty and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Far too often, Troopers see the tragic consequences of preventable motor vehicle crashes. Troopers urge motorists to have a plan in place before consuming alcohol as it can impair visual ability, diminish fine motor skills, and decrease reaction times. Please choose never to drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver, and always buckle up. The conversation you have could make all the difference.
