Troop L History

Louisiana State Police Troop L, located in the center of St. Tammany Parish, encompasses a four-parish area totaling over 2,700 square miles. With four major interstate systems, Troop L experiences a high volume of both commercial and private motor vehicle traffic.

In addition to interstate travel, Troop L has seen a steady increase in residential population over the past decade, contributing to more traffic on state highways and an increase in student population throughout local schools. Despite these increases, Troop L has achieved a 34% reduction in fatal crashes since 2009. This reduction is attributed to the troop's commitment to proactive educational campaigns and targeted enforcement of common safety violations.

Troop L began in 1959 with its first headquarters housed in a log cabin on the grounds of Fontainebleau State Park near Mandeville. With only eleven troopers working around the clock, Troop L served a primarily rural section of the state. As population and manpower demands increased, Troop L relocated to its current site on the U.S. 190 Service Road near Interstate 12. This move included the addition of six more troopers to better support the four-parish region.

In 1977, construction began on Troop L's present-day headquarters, which remains centrally located in St. Tammany Parish. Today, Troop L proudly serves its parishes with 65 commissioned troopers and four civilian employees, continuing its mission of ensuring the safety and security of Louisiana residents.
