Independence – Louisiana State Police detectives are continuing their investigation into a deputy-involved shooting involving the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office that occurred on the evening of May 8, 2025.
Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 7:10 p.m., TPSO deputies responded to a residence on Labruzza Lane in Independence following a 911 call reporting a domestic violence incident involving a stabbing victim.
Upon arrival, the deputies encountered forty-three-year-old Cornelius King Sr. of Independence, who had initially barricaded himself inside the residence. During the encounter, a deputy discharged their service weapon, striking King.
King was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Forty-eight-year-old Elaine Davis of Hammond was also transported to a local hospital following the incident. Davis sustained injuries during the domestic violence incident and later succumbed to those injuries.
The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab is processing the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
Investigators will be seeking a warrant for second-degree murder. King will be booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail upon his release from the hospital.
This investigation remains active, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.

Independence – On May 8, 2025, at approximately 8:20 p.m., detectives with the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations were requested by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office to investigate a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Labruzza Lane near LA Hwy 40 in Independence.
Investigators are working to process the scene and gather further information. One suspect was shot and has been transported to a local hospital for treatment. No deputies were harmed during the incident.
This remains an active investigation. Additional details will be released as they become available.
