Church Point – On November 5, 2025, shortly after 7:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a two-vehicle fatality crash on Louisiana Highway 754 near Jessie Richard Road in Saint Landry Parish. The crash claimed the life of 52-year-old Sonya McClendon of Opelousas.

The preliminary investigation revealed that McClendon was driving a 2015 Nissan Versa west on LA Hwy 754. At the same time, a 2023 Ford F-150 was traveling east. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan crossed the center line and struck the Ford head-on.

McClendon, who was not restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford, who was restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Standard toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being severely injured or killed in a crash. Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Properly wearing your seat belt is one of the most effective ways to save your life and reduce injuries during crashes.
