Gheens – On September 14, 2026, shortly after 6:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash on Louisiana Highway 654 near Home Place in Lafourche Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 74-year-old Chris Dufrene of Gheens.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Dufrene was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Corvette west on LA Hwy 654. For reasons still under investigation, the Chevrolet attempted to pass another westbound vehicle in a designated no-passing zone. While traveling in the opposing lane, the Chevrolet encountered an oncoming eastbound vehicle. As the Chevrolet attempted to return to the westbound lane, it traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.
Dufrene, who was unrestrained at the time of the crash, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.
A standard toxicology sample was collected from Dufrene and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make responsible choices when driving. Avoid impairment, fatigue, and distractions, and follow all traffic laws. Most importantly, ensure every occupant in the vehicle is properly restrained. Seat belts remain one of the most effective ways to prevent serious injury or death in a crash. While not all crashes are preventable, simple precautions like these can save lives.
