Vinton – On July 26, 2024, shortly after 8:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on Interstate 10 just east of Louisiana Highway 109. The crash claimed the life of 58-year-old Andrew Gonsalves of Kinder.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Gonsalves was traveling east on I-10 while driving a 2000 Lexus ES. At the same time, a 2014 Volvo 18-wheeler was also traveling east on I-10. For reasons still under investigation, the Lexus struck the rear of the 18-wheeler before traveling off the roadway to the right and striking several trees.
Gonsalves, who was not restrained, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the 18-wheeler was properly restrained and uninjured.
A standard toxicology sample was collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers wish to remind all motorists to make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Additionally, Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. While not all crashes are survivable, these precautions can significantly reduce your chances of being severely injured or killed.
Troop D has investigated 9 fatal crashes resulting in 10 fatalities in 2024.
