Unrestrained Driver Killed in Calcasieu Parish Crash

Vinton – On May 16, 2026, shortly before 11:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 109 at its intersection with Louisiana Highway 3063 in Calcasieu Parish. The crash claimed the life of 59-year-old Carla Hyatt of Starks.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2023 Mazda CX-5 was traveling east on Niblett Bluff Road, approaching LA Hwy 109. At the same time, a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Hyatt, was traveling south on LA Hwy 109. For reasons still under investigation, as the Mazda approached the intersection, it failed to yield to the approaching Chevrolet and entered the roadway, where the Chevrolet struck the Mazda.

The driver of the Mazda and three passengers were properly restrained and transported to a local hospital with minor to moderate injuries. Hyatt, who was unrestrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Although impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police reminds motorists that while not all crashes are survivable, proper seat belt use significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death during a crash. Additionally, distracted, inattentive, and reckless driving continues to be a leading cause of crashes in our state. Making responsible decisions behind the wheel, including wearing a seat belt and remaining attentive, can save lives.
