Carencro – On January 16, 2026, shortly before 9:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on Interstate 49 near Louisiana Highway 182 in Lafayette Parish. The crash claimed the life of a pedestrian whose identity remains unknown.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian was attempting to cross I-49 northbound. At the same time, a 2018 Hyundai Sonata was traveling north on I-49 in the left lane. For reasons still under investigation, the pedestrian was struck by the Hyundai as he was attempting to cross the roadway.
The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Standard toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers are still working to identify the pedestrian involved. If anyone has information related to this incident, they are urged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop I at (337) 262-5880.
Louisiana State Police urge both pedestrians and motorists to remain alert and aware of their surroundings while on or near roadways. Crashes involving pedestrians are often preventable when basic safety measures are observed. Interstate highways are designed for high-speed traffic and limited access, which makes pedestrian activity especially hazardous. For this reason, Louisiana law (LA R.S. 32:216) prohibits pedestrians from walking along or crossing interstate highways except in emergency situations.
