Delta – On Thursday, August 8, 2024, shortly before 8:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash on I-20 just west of LA 602. The crash claimed the life of an unidentified driver.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a Ford Transit, driven by the unidentified driver, was traveling east on the westbound shoulder of I-20. At the same time, a 2024 Volvo Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) was traveling west in the right westbound lane of I-20. Upon observing the Ford, the driver of the CMV began moving to the left lane. For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Ford steered into the path of the CMV. As a result, the CMV struck the Ford head-on, causing both vehicles to become engulfed in flames.

The driver of the Ford suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver and passenger of the CMV were transported to area hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. Routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued or distracted, follow all traffic laws, and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
