Two Killed in Ascension Parish Crash on Interstate 10

Gonzales – Just before 8:30 p.m. on February 1, 2026, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 west near milepost 179 in Ascension Parish. The crash claimed the lives of 32-year-old Jose Luis Martinez II and 32-year-old Ashley Garza, both of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2022 Toyota RAV4 was traveling west on Interstate 10 near milepost 179, in the left lane. At the same time, a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe, a fully marked Gonzales Police Department unit, was unoccupied and positioned in the left lane with emergency lights activated while officers investigated a separate crash. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota struck the rear of the parked police unit.

The driver and front seat passenger of the Toyota were properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries, and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Martinez, the rear left passenger, was properly restrained and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Garza, the rear right passenger, was properly restrained, sustained serious injuries, and was transported to a local hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Impairment is unknown at this time; however, routine toxicology samples will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists that Louisiana law requires drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles with flashing lights, including those stopped on the roadway while assisting others or investigating crashes. Failing to move over places first responders and the public at serious risk. Drivers should remain alert, reduce speed, and be prepared for unexpected roadway conditions near emergency activity.
