Two Drivers Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-10 in Metairie

Metairie – On Monday, June 17, 2024, shortly after midnight, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B were notified of a multi-vehicle crash on I-10 west near Bonnabel Boulevard in Metairie. The crash ultimately claimed the lives of 78-year-old Carlos Martinez of Kenner and 66-year-old Betty Savoie of Metairie.

The initial investigation revealed that a 2012 Kia Soul and a 2017 Toyota Tundra were involved in a crash on I-10 West near Bonnabel Boulevard. The Kia was disabled as a result of this crash and left abandoned in the roadway. Shortly after, Martinez was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla west on I-10 near Bonnabel Boulevard and impacted the disabled Kia in the roadway. Martinez exited his disabled Corolla and attempted to notify oncoming traffic. Moments later, a 2006 Infiniti G35, driven by Savoie, approached the location of the crash and impacted the rear of the Corolla. During this collision, Martinez was struck by one of the vehicles. The Infiniti G35 was then impacted by a 2014 BMW X5 that was also traveling west on I-10.

Martinez suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. Savoie, who was properly restrained, suffered fatal injuries and died on scene. Impairment is not suspected; however, routine toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers would like to remind the public that visibility is significantly reduced when driving at night due to the dark conditions. It is crucial to be extra vigilant when it is dark, as your vision is impaired. In the event of a crash, it is important to immediately call 911 and move your vehicle out of the road to prevent further crashes. Please remain in your vehicle unless it is absolutely necessary to exit for your safety, and under no circumstances should you attempt to direct traffic. Your safety and the safety of others on the road should always be the top priority.
