Troopers Investigate Two Separate Fatal Crashes in Allen Parish
Allen Parish – On December 16, 2022, at approximately 1:15 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 10 just west of Callahan Road in Allen Parish. The crash claimed the life of 80-year-old Phillip L. Veazey of Oberlin.
The initial investigation revealed a 2006 GMC Sierra, driven by Veazey, was traveling east on LA 10. For unknown reasons, the GMC left the roadway, traveled through a ditch, and began to overturn. The impact caused Veazey to be ejected from the vehicle.
Veazey, who was not restrained, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Allen Parish – On December 16, 2022, shortly before 2:00 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of LA Hwy 112 and LA Hwy 377 in Allen Parish. The crash claimed the life of 31-year-old Katlin Wayne Powell of DeRidder.
The initial investigation revealed a 1991 Peterbilt, driven by Powell, was traveling west on LA 112. At the same time, the driver of a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, was traveling west on LA 112 and in front of the Peterbilt. As the driver of the Chevrolet stopped and prepared to make a left turn onto LA 377, Powell did not observe the stopped vehicle and began braking hard in an effort to avoid striking the Chevrolet. While Powell was braking, the utility poles on the trailer shifted forward, penetrated the cab of the Peterbilt, and struck Powell. The Chevrolet sustained minor damage from one of the utility poles that became dislodged from the trailer.
Despite being properly restrained, Powell sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet complained of injuries. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists to always make good decisions while operating motor vehicles. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Always ensure every occupant is properly restrained and follow all traffic laws. Taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
Troop D has investigated 29 fatal crashes resulting in 31 deaths in 2022.
