New Orleans – Earlier today, Troop NOLA Troopers (with the assistance of local and federal law enforcement partners) were conducting proactive patrols and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2017 Chevrolet Corvette for multiple traffic violations near Elysian Fields Ave. & North Robertson St. The occupants of the Corvette, 33-year-old Christopher Mitchell and 24-year-old Eric Abdul, refused to stop and fled from Troopers through several city streets before crashing into a fire hydrant at Annette St. & North Johnson St. Both subjects fled on foot, but were later located by law enforcement canvassing the area.
The preliminary investigation reveals that Mitchell sustained what investigators believe to be an unintentional gunshot wound to the leg inflicted by a handgun in his possession. Troopers and assisting agencies provided immediate medical care to Mitchell. He was later transported to a local hospital for treatment. Abdul was located and taken into custody without further incident. Charges are pending for both subjects as investigators work to identify which was the driver of the vehicle.
