Troop A Troopers Investigating Two Separate Fatal Crashes

Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A are investigating two separate fatal crashes that occurred Monday evening in East Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee Parishes. Both crashes resulted in the deaths of the drivers involved.

East Baton Rouge Parish – Shortly before 6:45 p.m. on July 7, 2025, Troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 12 eastbound at milepost 25 in Livingston Parish. The crash claimed the life of 61-year-old Edward Mathis of Dickinson, Texas.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 International tractor-trailer, driven by Mathis, was traveling east in the right lane of I-12. For reasons still under investigation, the tractor-trailer exited the roadway to the right and struck multiple trees, and became fully engulfed in flames.

Mathis was pronounced deceased on the scene. Due to the severity of the crash, impairment and seat belt usage are unknown. This crash remains under investigation.

Pointe Coupee Parish – Shortly after 9:15 p.m. on July 7, 2025, Troopers began investigating a single-vehicle crash on LA 415 (Patin Dyke Road) at Driftwood Drive. The crash claimed the life of 39-year-old Brenton Pickett of Livonia.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Pickett, was traveling east on LA 415. For reasons still under investigation, the Chevrolet exited the roadway to the right and overturned.

Pickett was unrestrained and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Impairment is unknown; however, a standard toxicology sample was taken and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make responsible choices when driving: avoid impairment, fatigue, and distractions. Follow traffic laws and ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained. While not all crashes are preventable, simple precautions like these can save lives.
