Hammond – On November 10, 2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two-vehicle serious injury crash on Interstate 12 near milepost 40 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 76-year-old June Volkman of Zapata, Texas.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas was traveling east on Interstate 12. At the same time a 2015 Harley Davidson Ultra Limited was traveling east in front of the Volkswagen. For reasons still under investigation, the Volkswagen impacted the rear of the Harley, ejecting both the driver and passenger.
The driver of the Harley, who was wearing a DOT-approved helmet, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The passenger of the Harley, Volkman, who was wearing a DOT-approved helmet, suffered severe injuries and was also transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen who was properly restrained, was uninjured, and was issued a citation for LRS 32:81 – Following too closely. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis. This crash remains under investigation and Troopers will forward their findings to the 21nd Judicial District Court District Attorney’s office for consultation of potential further charges.
Troopers wish to remind all motorists to make safe and responsible decisions when sharing the road. Drivers are urged to remain alert for motorcyclists and allow them ample space in traffic. Motorcyclists are encouraged to prioritize safety by always wearing a DOT-approved helmet and protective gear. While not all crashes are survivable, wearing a helmet significantly increases the chance of surviving a serious crash and reducing the severity of injuries. Louisiana State Police also encourage riders of all experience levels to consider enrolling in an approved motorcycle safety course. These programs provide valuable skills and strategies that can help reduce crashes and save lives.
