Meraux – On Saturday, May 3, 2025, around11:30 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a three-vehicle crash on E. Judge Perez Highway near Bartolo Street in St. Bernard Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 91-year-old Rita Owens of St. Bernard.
The preliminary investigation revealed Owens was driving a 2016 Nissan Versa south on E. Judge Perez Highway when her vehicle impacted a 2019 Nissan Versa, also traveling south. After the initial impact, Owens’ vehicle veered into the left lane, which was closed for construction, and impacted a Ford F350 stopped in the closed lane.
Owens, who was unrestrained, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital where she died. The driver of the 2019 Nissan Versa was restrained and uninjured. The occupant of the Ford was also uninjured. Standard toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
