Westwego – Shortly after 1:30 a.m. this morning, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on US 90B at Wayne Avenue in Jefferson Parish. The single vehicle crash involved a motorcycle and claimed the life of 52-year-old Troy Wingerter of Westwego.

Troopers initial investigation revealed that Wingerter was operating a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle on US 90B eastbound near Wayne Avenue at a high rate of speed. For reasons still under investigation, Wingerter lost control of the motorcycle, ran off the roadway to the left and entered the median. The motorcycle then struck a cement fixture which caused the motorcycle to become airborne. Wingerter then reentered the roadway and struck a traffic signed which caused him to be ejected. He was not wearing a DOT approved helmet at the time of the crash. Wingerter sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash however, a toxicology test will be performed following an autopsy. This crash remains under investigation and there is no further information available at this time.

DOT approved helmets are required by Louisiana law for all riders. The helmet will provide protection for the brain and decrease the chances of traumatic brain injury. Troopers encourage all riders to take an approved motorcycle safety course. These courses teach safe riding practices and help you apply safe riding strategies that can help reduce your chance of injury should a crash occur. Anyone interested in attending motorcycle safety courses can go to http://lsp.org/motorcycle.html for more information. Making good choices while riding a motorcycle, such as never driving while impaired and obeying all traffic laws, can often mean the difference between life and death.
