Speed Suspected Factor in Jefferson Parish Fatal Crash

Avondale – On August 13, 2024, just before 2:30 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a two-vehicle crash on the Westbank Expressway at Beechgrove Boulevard. The crash claimed the life of 36-year-old Lance Marshall of Waggaman.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Marshall was driving a 2007 Infiniti M35 west on the Westbank Expressway at a high rate of speed. At the same time, a 2011 Honda CRV was traveling south on Beechgrove Boulevard, approaching the Westbank Expressway. As the Infiniti approached the Beechgrove Boulevard intersection, Marshall disregarded a red traffic signal and traveled directly into the path of the Honda. The Honda then impacted the Infiniti, which caused the Infiniti travel off the roadway, impact a concrete business sign, and enter a ditch before catching fire.

Marshall, whose restraint use is unknown, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Infiniti, whose restraint use is also unknown, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the Honda was properly restrained and not injured. Impairment is unknown, standard toxicology samples will be taken and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

When a motorist speeds, they significantly increase their risk of severe injury or death in a crash. Speeding also raises the likelihood of losing control of the vehicle, reduces the driver's ability to react to and avoid roadway hazards, and extends the distance needed to safely stop the vehicle.
