Belle Chasse – On Thursday, September 12, 2024, shortly before 10:30 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B were notified of a single-vehicle crash on LA 23 near Shady Oaks Lane in Plaquemines Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 22-year-old Chance Dickerson of Lubbock, Texas.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Dickerson was driving a 2008 Nissan Z south on LA 23 near Shady Oaks Lane. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a mailbox and two electrical poles.
Dickerson, who was restrained, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained for analysis.
When motorists drive at higher speeds, they significantly increase their risk of severe injury or death in a crash. They also put surrounding motorists and the public at serious risk. Speeding also makes it harder to control your vehicle, slows your reaction time to hazards, and increases the distance to stop your vehicle safely. Additionally, impaired and distracted driving continues to be a major factor in crashes throughout our state. Never drive under the influence, and stay focused on the road. Troopers continue to urge motorists to follow speed limits and other traffic laws to keep everyone safer on the road.
