Swartz- On Thursday, December 8, 2022, shortly after 6:30 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a four-vehicle crash that occurred on LA Hwy 139 at Trichel Road. This crash claimed the life of 70-year-old Louis E. Higgins.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Toyota Camry, driven by Higgins, was northbound on LA Hwy 139. For reasons still under investigation, the Camry struck a 1994 GMC truck as it was waiting to make a left turn onto Trichel Road. After the initial crash, the Camry continued into the southbound travel lane impacting a 2022 KIA K5 and then striking a 2013 Ford F-150.
Higgins, who was restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ouachita Parish Coroner’s Office. No other injuries were reported. Toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers would like to remind the public that inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and is a leading cause of crashes in our state. It is important for motorists to pay attention to what is going on outside of the vehicle they are driving and to get plenty of rest in order to remain alert.
In 2022, Troop F has investigated 29 fatal crashes, resulting in 32 deaths.
