Port Sulphur – On Friday, September 6, 2024, around 10:30 am, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B were notified of a two-vehicle crash on LA 23 near Songy Lane in Plaquemines Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 71-year-old Anthony Roque of New Orleans.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Roque was driving a 2019 Hyundai Sonata south on LA 23 near Songy Lane while a 2020 Freightliner Flatbed Truck was traveling north on LA 23. For reasons still under investigation, the Hyundai crossed the centerline and struck the left rear side of the Freightliner.
Roque, who was unrestrained, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Freightliner was properly restrained and uninjured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis.
While not all crashes are survivable, wearing seat belts correctly can significantly improve your chances of survival and reduce injury severity. Additionally, impaired and distracted driving remains a leading cause of crashes in our state. Never drive under the influence, and pay attention to the road while driving. You can significantly enhance road safety by taking these simple precautions and adhering to all traffic laws.
