New Iberia – On March 21, 2026, shortly before 5:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on U.S. Highway 90 Frontage Road near Grand Prairie Rd in Iberia Parish. The crash claimed the life of 24-year-old Katlin Khayankane of New Iberia.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Khayankane was walking in an unknown direction in the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 90 Frontage Road. At the same time, a 2014 Ford F-150 was also traveling west on U.S. Highway 90 Frontage Road. For reasons still under investigation, Khayankane was in the roadway on U.S. Highway 90 Frontage Road in dark clothing and was struck by the Ford.

Khayankane sustained serious injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the Ford was properly restrained and reported no injuries. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash; however, routine toxicology samples were collected for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers urge all pedestrians and motorists to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times. Pedestrians should cross roadways at well-lit intersections and wear reflective clothing when walking near traffic, especially at night. These safety practices are critical in reducing preventable tragedies on our roadways.
