Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Ascension Parish Crash
Gonzales – Shortly before 9:00 p.m. on April 19, 2026, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a serious injury crash involving a pedestrian on LA 44 at Villa Court North in Ascension Parish. The crash claimed the life of 20-year-old Jacqueline Merritt of Gonzales.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Merritt was walking south in the southbound lane of LA 44. At the same time, a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado and a 2023 Ram 1500 were also traveling south on LA 44. For reasons still under investigation, Merritt was struck by the Chevrolet Silverado in the center of the southbound lane. After initial impact, the Silverado came to a stop and was rear-ended by the Ram.
Merritt sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The drivers of both vehicles were properly restrained and were uninjured. Impairment is not suspected; however, routine toxicology samples will be obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers wish to remind pedestrians and motorists that roadway safety is a shared responsibility. Pedestrians should avoid walking in travel lanes whenever possible and wear visible clothing at night. Motorists are encouraged to remain alert, especially in low-light conditions, and to always be prepared to react to unexpected hazards.
