Pedestrian Killed in Tangipahoa Parish Crash
Amite – On July 3, 2026, at 1:20 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on US Highway 51 near Ponders Quarters Lane in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 72-year-old Robert Baker of Amite.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling north on US Highway 51. At the same time, a pedestrian, later identified as Baker, was in the northbound lane of US Highway 51. For reasons still under investigation, the Jeep struck Baker in the roadway.
Baker suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the Jeep, who was properly restrained, was not injured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were collected from both Baker and the driver for analysis.
Louisiana State Police urge both pedestrians and motorists to remain alert and aware of their surroundings while on or near roadways. Crashes involving pedestrians are often preventable when basic safety measures are observed. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear reflective clothing, utilize well-lit areas, walk facing oncoming traffic, and minimize distractions. Walking along an interstate is prohibited under Louisiana law, except in emergency situations.
