Opelousas – On August 29, 2026, shortly after 8:30 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on Interstate 49 North near U.S. Highway 190. The crash claimed the life of 46-year-old Lee Malveaux of Opelousas.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2024 Nissan Pathfinder was traveling north on I-49 in the right lane. At the same time, Malveaux, who was wearing dark clothing, attempted to cross both northbound lanes of I-49 from the shoulder. For reasons still under investigation, Malveaux was struck by the Nissan.
Malveaux sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Nissan was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Malveaux and submitted for analysis. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor; however, the crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Police urge both pedestrians and motorists to remain alert and aware of their surroundings while on or near roadways. Crashes involving pedestrians are often preventable when basic safety measures are observed. Interstate highways are designed for high-speed traffic and limited access, which makes pedestrian activity especially hazardous. For this reason, Louisiana law (LA R.S. 32:216) prohibits pedestrians from walking along or crossing interstate highways except in emergency situations.
