Laplace – On Saturday, June 7, 2025, just before 9:30 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a crash involving a pedestrian on US 61 north, near Carrollwood Drive in St. John the Baptist Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 75-year-old Rose Mary Valentine of Laplace.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Valentine was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of US 61, wearing dark clothing, and not in a designated crosswalk. At the same time, a 2018 Nissan Rogue traveling south on US 61 made a u-turn to travel north on US 61, and struck Valentine in the right northbound lane.
Valentine suffered injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where she later died. The driver of the Nissan was properly restrained and uninjured. During the investigation, Troopers observed no signs of impairment on the part of the Nissan driver. This crash remains under investigation.
Practicing pedestrian safety guidelines while crossing and walking near roadways is crucial in reducing the risk of crashes. Pedestrians should always cross roads at a designated crosswalk. Walking against the direction of traffic enables pedestrians to anticipate oncoming vehicles and react promptly. Additionally, wearing brightly colored clothing or using reflective accessories when walking in low-light conditions can significantly improve visibility for drivers. Lastly, drivers should always keep in mind that they share the road with bicyclists and pedestrians, and remember to be vigilant for their presence. By following these practices, pedestrians can enhance their safety and minimize the chances of collisions.
