Amite – On March 19, 2025, at approximately 4:40 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA Hwy 16 near Leonard Chapel Road in St. Helena Parish. The crash claimed the life of 43-year-old Chad A. Ribando of Tickfaw.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2017 Dodge Charger was traveling eastbound on LA Hwy 16. At the same time, Ribando was walking in the eastbound lane of LA Hwy 16. For reasons still under investigation, the Dodge struck Ribando in the eastbound lane.
Ribando, who was wearing dark-colored clothing, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Dodge, who was properly restrained, was uninjured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained from both Ribando and the driver of the Dodge for analysis.
Both pedestrians and motorists should always remain vigilant on roadways and stay aware of their surroundings. Pedestrian crashes are often preventable with basic safety measures. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and avoid walking on roadways in dark or unlit areas. Always assume that drivers may not see you, especially at night. To stay safe, pedestrians should walk facing traffic and cross roadways only in well-lit, designated areas. These simple precautions can help prevent tragic incidents and enhance safety on Louisiana roadways.
