Lake Providence – On Thursday, May 8, 2025, shortly after 12:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a crash involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Charles D Jones Blvd and Second Street. The crash claimed the life of 38-year-old Exzerial Thompson of Lake Providence.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Thompson, who was wearing dark clothing, was standing in the intersection when he was struck by an unknown vehicle. The driver did not stop to render aid and fled the scene.

Thompson received serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital, where he later died.

After conducting a thorough investigation, Troopers, with the assistance of the East Carroll Sheriff’s Office, identified the unknown vehicle as a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe. At the time of the crash, the Chevrolet was driven by 55-year-old Ben Jones of Lake Providence. Jones was arrested and processed into the Riverbend Detention Center for Hit-and-Run Driving.

Routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers urge pedestrians to remain vigilant while walking near roadways. Taking simple precautions, such as walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic, can significantly reduce the risk of pedestrian-related crashes. Additionally, drivers need to be aware of the consequences of hit-and-run driving. Those who commit the crime of felony hit-and-run driving resulting in death or serious bodily injury can face fines of up to five thousand dollars and up to ten years in prison.
