New Iberia – On August 26, 2025, just before 8:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two-vehicle serious injury crash on US Highway 90 Westbound near the off-ramp onto Louisiana Highway 675. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 19-year-old Colbi Blanchard of Thibodaux.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2014 Ford Fusion was traveling west on US Hwy 90. At the same time, a 2019 International Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) was stopped in the painted gore area between US-90 West and the off-ramp onto LA Hwy 675. For reasons still under investigation, the Ford exited the westbound travel lane and entered the painted gore area, striking the rear of the CMV.
Both the driver of the Ford and Blanchard, the front seat passenger, were properly restrained and sustained serious injuries. The driver of the CMV was also properly restrained and sustained minor injuries. All three were transported to a local-area hospital for treatment.
Although impairment is not suspected, driver fatigue is believed to be a factor in this crash. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from both drivers and submitted for analysis.
On August 30, 2025, Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified that Blanchard succumbed to his injuries. This crash remains under investigation.
The Louisiana State Police would like to remind all motorists that fatigue can significantly affect driving ability. Falling asleep behind the wheel can lead to dangerous situations, much like the effects of alcohol or drugs. Additionally, stopping in unsafe areas, such as the gore zone, can obstruct traffic flow and increase the risk of collisions. Motorists are encouraged to stay alert and take regular breaks during long trips. Failing to do so can have serious and potentially deadly consequences.
