One Dead Following Five-Vehicle Crash in Cameron Parish
Bell City – On May 21, 2026, shortly after 6:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a fatal multi-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 27 near Louisiana Highway 384 in Cameron Parish. The crash claimed the life of 71-year-old Danny Hillebrandt of Westlake.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Hillebrandt was driving a 1998 Ford Ranger north on LA Hwy 27 as traffic began slowing due to traffic congestion. At the same time, a 2016 Ford F-750, a 2023 Ford F-150, a 2012 Ford F-150, and a 2021 Chrysler 300 were also traveling north on LA Hwy 27. For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the F-750 failed to slow down and rear-ended the Ranger, resulting in a crash involving the other three vehicles.
Hillebrandt, who was properly restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the F-750 and the occupants of the other vehicles sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the Chrysler sustained no injuries. Although impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, distracted and inattentive driving continues to be a leading cause of crashes in our state. Troopers urge motorists to always make responsible choices when driving: avoid impairment, fatigue, and distractions. Follow traffic laws and ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained. While not all crashes are preventable, simple precautions like these can save lives.
