Marrero – On December 15, 2021 at approximately 6:30 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a five vehicle crash that occurred on US 90B elevated expressway near LA 45 exit (Barataria Boulevard). The crash ultimately claimed the life of 72-year-old Carl Ahysen of Westwego.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2012 Cadillac SRX was traveling west on the elevated portion of US 90B in the exit lane to LA 45. The Cadillac impacted the rear of a 2017 Ford Fusion, which was stopped in the in the exit lane to LA 45. The initial impact caused the Ford to impact the rear of the vehicle ahead of it, a 2019 Jeep Renegade. The series of impacts caused the Ford and the Cadillac to travel into the left and center lanes of US 90B west. At the same time, a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling in the left lane of US 90B west. As the Cherokee approached the Cadillac and Ford in the lanes, the driver steered to avoid impacting them. The Cherokee ultimately rolled onto its roof and slid across the westbound lanes of US 90B before impacting a 2010 Hyundai Genesis which was stopped in the exit lane to LA 45.
Ahysen, who was the front seat passenger of the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. At this time, restraint use is unknown for Ahysen.
Impairment is unknown at this time and blood samples were obtained from all drivers as a part of the ongoing investigation.
Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued or distracted, follow all traffic laws and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
