Motorcyclist Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash in Livingston Parish

Denham Springs – Shortly after 4:00 p.m. on September 15, 2024, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a three-vehicle crash on LA 447 at Parkway Drive in Livingston Parish. The crash claimed the life of 58-year-old Michael McManus of Denham Springs.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by McManus, was traveling northbound on LA 447 behind a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban. As the Chevrolet approached Parkway Drive, it stopped with its left turn signal activated, preparing to make a left turn. For reasons still under investigation, McManus failed to stop in time, and the Harley Davidson impacted the rear of the Chevrolet. As a result, McManus was ejected from the motorcycle, landed in the southbound lane of LA 447, and was struck by a 2017 Honda Accord.

McManus was not wearing a DOT-approved helmet and was pronounced deceased on the scene. Impairment on his part is suspected, and a toxicology sample will be taken and submitted for analysis. The drivers of the Chevrolet and the Honda were properly restrained and uninjured. Impairment on their part is not suspected, and both drivers voluntarily submitted to a chemical breath test. This crash is still under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued, or distracted; follow all traffic laws, and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. Additionally, when riding motorcycles, utilizing proper safety equipment, such as DOT-approved helmets can decrease the chances of traumatic brain injury. We encourage all riders to take an approved motorcycle safety course.
