Marrero – On February 22, 2026, just before 6:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on Louisiana Highway 45 (Barataria Blvd.) at Champagne Street in Jefferson Parish. The crash claimed the life of 47-year-old Paris Harris of Avondale.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2010 Hyundai Elantra was traveling north on LA Hwy 45. At the same time, a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle, driven by Harris, was traveling south on LA Hwy 45. For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Elantra failed to yield to the approaching motorcycle and turned into its path while attempting to perform a U-turn. The motorcycle then struck the passenger side of the Elantra, ejecting Harris.
Despite wearing a DOT-approved helmet, Harris suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. At the time of the crash, the driver of the Elantra was properly restrained and was uninjured.
Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash; however, as part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were collected from both drivers for analysis. While speed is suspected to have been a contributing factor, this crash remains under investigation.
Troopers remind motorists to always make safe and responsible decisions on the road. Never drive impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Follow all traffic laws and ensure every occupant is properly restrained. These simple precautions can help prevent serious injuries and save lives.
