Motorcyclist Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash in Evangeline Parish

Evangeline Parish – At approximately 11:45 p.m. on October 17, 2023, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I were notified of a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Louisiana Highway 104 west of Lanse De Deshotel Rd. The crash took the life of 64-year-old Russell John Armond, Sr. of Mamou.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed the crash occurred as Armond was driving a 2001 Honda Shadow motorcycle west on LA Hwy 104. For unknown reasons, Armond ran off the roadway to the right and entered a ditch. Upon doing so, Armond was ejected from the motorcycle.

Despite wearing a DOT-approved helmet, Armond suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead by the Evangeline Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is unknown, and a toxicology sample was submitted for analysis.

Troopers urge motorcyclists of all ages and experience levels to take extra precautions while riding and ensure they are adequately prepared and trained for various riding conditions. Through participation in certified training programs, riders are educated on safe riding practices such as being visible, dressing for safety, applying effective riding strategies, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of their motorcycle. Motorcyclists are taught how to use these safety practices to avoid being involved in a crash and to reduce the chance of injury should a collision occur.
