Slidell – On July 12, 2025, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 59 near the Interstate 12 interchange in St. Tammany Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 64-year-old Barry D. Stockstill of Picayune, Mississippi.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Stockstill was driving a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer pulling a trailer northbound on Interstate 59. For reasons still under investigation, the Mercury traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.

Stockstill, who was properly restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in the Mercury, who was properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. As part of the ongoing investigation, a routine toxicology sample was obtained from Stockstill for analysis.

Troopers remind motorists of the importance of making responsible decisions while operating a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, ill, fatigued, or distracted. Additionally, Louisiana law requires that every occupant of a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, remain properly restrained at all times. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions like these can often mean the difference between life and death.
