In January of 2026, detectives with the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division – Houma Field Office (LSP CID) were requested by the Thibodaux Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #52 to investigate a theft which resulted in the arrest of 53-year-old Shane Savant of Thibodaux.

Working in coordination with the Thibodaux Police Department (TPD), the preliminary investigation revealed that Savant, who was a sergeant with the agency at the time, was serving as treasurer for the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). On January 12, 2026, TPD Chief Bryan Zeringue was notified by FOP executive board members of multiple incidents of possible theft committed by Savant following a review of the organization’s bank statements. LSP CID was then requested to investigate and Savant was immediately placed on administrative leave by Chief Zeringue, with all department-issued property recovered pending the investigation.

As a result of the investigation, LSP CID detectives determined that Savant fraudulently used a Fraternal Order of Police–issued bank card to purchase personal items. LSP CID detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Savant through the Lafourche Parish 17th Judicial District Court on charges of LA R.S. 14:67 – Theft Greater than $5,000.00 (1 felony count) and LA R.S. 14:70.8 – Illegal Transmission of Monetary Funds (11 felony counts). On February 10, 2026, Savant was arrested and booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex on the above charges. This investigation remains ongoing.

Thibodaux Police Chief Bryan Zeringue stated the following: “After being notified by Thibodaux Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #52 of theft allegations involving Sergeant Shane Savant, the Board President requested that the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division investigate Savant’s alleged wrongdoing related to his administrative role within the FOP. The investigation determined that Savant violated state criminal law while performing off-duty tasks associated with that position. On February 9, 2026, prior to his arrest, Savant submitted a letter of resignation, voluntarily terminating his employment with the Thibodaux Police Department.

This is not just a violation of the law, but a violation of the community trust. Trustworthiness is one of our core values, and a cornerstone that the culture of this agency is built upon. It was a promise that if something was ever identified that violated the trust of those we serve, it would be dealt with and the wrongdoer would be held accountable. We hope that this serves as an example that the Thibodaux Police Department will not tolerate this type of conduct and will hold ourselves accountable.”
