Louisiana State Police Detectives Continue Investigation of Lafayette Police Department Officer-Involved Shooting

Louisiana State Police Detectives continue the investigation into the September 7, 2024, Lafayette Police Department officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Sybil Drive. The incident claimed the life of 27-year-old Rigoberto Sanchez of Lafayette.

 

The preliminary investigation revealed that shortly after 3:00 a.m., an officer with the Lafayette Police Department responded to a burglary complaint on Sybil Drive. While conducting the investigation, the officer located a suspect vehicle at a nearby residence. As the officer approached the vehicle on foot, the vehicle moved toward the officer. During the encounter, the officer discharged their service weapon, striking the driver who was later identified as Sanchez.

 

Sanchez suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The officer suffered minor injuries.

 

This is an active investigation, and further information will be released when it becomes available. The Lafayette Police Department is investigating the initial burglary complaint, while the Louisiana State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab assisted in processing the scene.

Lafayette - On September 7, 2024, shortly after 4:00 a.m., Detectives with the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division were requested by the Lafayette Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Sybil Drive.

 

Investigators are working to process the scene and gather further information.

 

One subject was pronounced deceased on the scene. No officers were harmed during the incident. This is an active investigation; further information will be released when it becomes available.
