Lettsworth Man Killed in Rapides Parish Crash

Rapides Parish – On May 28, 2024, at approximately 11:00 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop E began investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash on Louisiana Highway 107 at the intersection of Louisiana Highway 3128. This crash claimed the life of 49-year-old Dion Allen of Lettsworth.

The initial investigation revealed that a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by 43-year-old Charlie Hughes of Alexandria, was eastbound on Louisiana Highway 3128. As the Chevrolet approached the intersection of Louisiana Highway 107, Hughes failed to stop at the active flashing red-light. As a result, the Chevrolet entered the southbound travel lane of Louisiana Highway 107 and was struck by a southbound 2007 Nissan Murano.

Hughes, who was unrestrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Allen, a passenger in the Chevrolet and who was also unrestrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and two passengers in the Nissan, who were restrained, sustained minor injuries. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis.

While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, distracted and inattentive driving continues to be a leading cause of crashes in our state.  Louisiana State Police urges all motorists to stay alert while driving.  A lapse in one’s awareness can have deadly consequences.

While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.

In 2024, Troop E has investigated 24 fatal crashes, resulting in 26 deaths.
