Vacherie – On March 7, 2026, shortly before 10:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on Louisiana Highway 3213, approximately one mile north of LA Hwy 3127 in St. James Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 5-year old Demond Tenner of Baker.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2019 Hyundai Tucson was traveling south on LA Hwy 3213 and entering a right curve in the roadway. At the same time, a 2022 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling north and entering a left curve. For reasons still under investigation, the Tucson crossed the centerline and struck the Malibu head-on. After impact, the Tucson became fully engulfed in flames.

Seatbelt usage and airbag deployment for the Tucson are unknown due to the vehicle fire. All five occupants of the Tucson sustained moderate to serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals.

The driver of the Malibu was properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries, and was transported to an out-of-area hospital. The Malibu’s front-seat passenger was unrestrained, sustained serious injuries, and was also transported to an out-of-area hospital. Rear passengers, Tenner and a 4-year-old juvenile, were improperly restrained. Tenner was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the 4-year-old sustained serious injuries and was transported to an out-of-area hospital.

A standard toxicology sample was collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police stress that proper restraint use significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death in a crash. Louisiana law requires all occupants, regardless of seating position, to be properly restrained at all times. The proper use of seat belts and child safety seats can be the difference between life and death. Parents and caregivers who are unsure about their child’s car seat installation are encouraged to visit any Louisiana State Police Troop or contact the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission to locate the nearest fitting station. Ensuring correct installation and usage of car seats and booster seats is critical to preventing injuries and saving lives.
