St. Bernard – On Friday, March 14, 2025, around 10:20 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B were notified of a two-vehicle crash involving a bicycle on LA 300 (Bayou Road) near LA 39 in St. Bernard Parish. The crash claimed the life of 13-year-old Joshua Bordelon of St. Bernard, and injured another juvenile rider on the bicycle.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Bordelon and another juvenile were riding a bicycle in the middle of the westbound lane. At the same time, a 2014 GMC Yukon SUV was traveling west on LA 300, approaching LA 39. For reasons still under investigation, the GMC struck the bicycle in the westbound lane. At the time of the crash, LA 300 was poorly lit, both riders were wearing dark clothing and there were no lights on the bicycle.
Bordelon suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he died. The other juvenile rider sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. At the time of the crash, the driver of the GMC was not properly restrained, but was uninjured. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from the driver of the GMC. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers urge motorists and bicyclists to share the road safely. Louisiana law classifies bicycles as vehicles, meaning cyclists must adhere to the same traffic laws as motorists. Never assume that a motorist can see you, and remember it’s important to stay visible by using appropriate lighting and wearing bright or reflective clothing in low-light conditions. While cyclists are required to ride as close to the right-hand side of the road as possible, except when passing or turning left, passing motorists must yield to bicyclists, leaving a safe space of no less than three feet between their vehicle and the bicyclist.
