Impaired Driver Arrested Following Serious Injury Crash in Jefferson Davis Parish

Roanoke – On September 11, 2026, shortly after 4:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 395 near North Railroad Avenue in Jefferson Davis Parish. The crash resulted in serious, life-threatening injuries to a 4-month-old child.

 

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Hyundai Sonata was traveling south on LA Hwy 395. At the same time, a 2015 Ford Transit was traveling north on LA Hwy 395. For reasons still under investigation, the Hyundai crossed the centerline into the northbound lane and struck the Ford head-on.

The driver of the Hyundai, 22-year-old Teyonna Washington of Houston, Texas, was unrestrained and sustained minor injuries. A 4-month-old child was positioned in an infant carrier in the front passenger seat. A certified passenger safety technician trooper determined that the carrier was not properly attached to the vehicle, and the child was not properly restrained in the carrier. The child sustained serious, life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford and his two passengers were properly restrained and sustained minor injuries. Both drivers and all three passengers were transported to area hospitals for treatment. 

During the investigation, Washington showed signs of impairment and was arrested. Following her release from the hospital, Washington was booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail for Driving While Intoxicated (1st Offense) and First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring.

Louisiana State Police reminds motorists that impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of serious injury and fatal crashes. Drivers should never operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or any substance that affects their ability to drive safely.

Louisiana law requires children from birth to at least 2 years old to ride rear-facing in an infant or convertible child safety seat. Children younger than 13 shall ride in the rear seat, when available, and remain properly restrained.
