Impaired Driver Arrested Following Fatal Crash in Cameron Parish

Cameron – On August 27, 2026, shortly after 1:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA Highway 27 near Ruby Lane. The crash claimed the life of 35-year-old Javier Ibarra of Baytown, Texas.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche, driven by 34-year-old Rogelio Sanchez of Baytown, Texas, was traveling west on LA Highway 27. For reasons still under investigation, the Chevrolet failed to negotiate a left-hand curve, began rotating counterclockwise, and overturned.

All three occupants were unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle. Sanchez and another passenger sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Ibarra sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

During the investigation, Sanchez showed signs of impairment and was subsequently arrested. Upon his release from the hospital, Sanchez will be booked into the Cameron Parish Jail for multiple traffic violations as well as the following charges:

·       Vehicular Homicide

·       First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring

As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were collected for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police remind all motorists of the dangers of impaired driving, which can have devastating consequences, whether caused by alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two. Motorists are urged to make responsible decisions, including never driving while impaired, always ensuring all occupants are properly restrained, and avoiding distractions while driving.
