Bell City – On April 9, 2026, shortly before 6:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a three-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 27 near Louisiana Highway 397 in Calcasieu Parish. The crash claimed the life of 32-year-old Erick John of Lake Charles.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 32-year-old Alfonso Arredondo of Port Neches, TX., was traveling south on Louisiana Highway 27. At the same time, a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling north, followed by a 2000 Buick Park Avenue, driven by John. For reasons still under investigation, Arredondo crossed the centerline and sideswiped both the Hyundai and Buick. Arredondo then lost control of the vehicle, exited the roadway, entered a ditch, and overturned.
John, who was properly restrained, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and four passengers of the Hyundai were properly restrained and were transported to a local hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
During the investigation, Arredondo showed signs of impairment and was placed under arrest. Arredondo was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center for Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Negligent Injury (5 counts), Driving While Intoxicated (Second Offense), and Driving Left to Center. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Police reminds all motorists that impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of serious and fatal crashes. Never drive impaired, always ensure all occupants are properly restrained, and remain focused behind the wheel. Making responsible decisions can save lives.
