Head-On Crash in Richland Parish Kills One and Injures Two
Holly Ridge– On Thursday, January 25, 2024, shortly after 6:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a three-vehicle fatal crash on US-80 west of LA-183. The crash claimed the life of 76-year-old Walter Carroll of Rayville.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2014 Nissan Altima, driven by Carroll, was traveling west on US-80 behind a 2004 Nissan Frontier. At the same time, a 1997 Dodge Ram was traveling east on US-80. For reasons still under investigation, the Altima attempted to pass the Frontier in a passing zone and struck the Ram head-on. After the impact, the Altima traveled into the westbound lane of US-80 and struck the Frontier.
Carroll, who was unrestrained, was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the Frontier and the Ram, who were both properly restrained, were transported to a local area hospital with moderate injuries. Although impairment is not suspected, routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Follow all traffic laws and always ensure that every occupant is properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
In 2024, Troop F has investigated two fatal crashes, resulting in two deaths.
