Gonzales Woman Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash in Ascension Parish
Gonzales – Just before 2:00 p.m. on December 11, 2024, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a two-vehicle crash on US 61 at the intersection of LA 621 in Ascension Parish. The crash claimed the life of 67-year-old Juanita Holland of Gonzales.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Buick Enclave was traveling northbound on US 61, and entered the left turning lane to travel onto LA 621. At the same time, a 2017 Toyota Camry was traveling southbound on US 61, approaching the intersection of LA 621. For reasons still under investigation, the Buick failed to properly yield to oncoming traffic and traveled into the intersection. As a result, the Toyota collided with the passenger side of the Buick in the southbound lanes of US 61.
Holland, the front seat passenger of the Toyota, was unrestrained, suffered severe injuries, and was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The drivers of both vehicles were properly restrained, suffered moderate injuries, and were transported to a local hospital. Impairment is not a suspected factor in this crash; however, standard toxicology samples will be taken and submitted for analysis. This crash is still under investigation.
Troopers wish to remind motorists to approach intersections with caution. A blinking yellow left turn arrow means you can turn left but must yield to oncoming traffic. A solid yellow arrow warns that the light is about to turn red, so prepare to stop. Stay alert, be patient, and prioritize safety at all times.
Always make responsible choices when driving: avoid impairment, fatigue, and distractions. Follow traffic laws, and ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained. While not all crashes are preventable, simple precautions like these can save lives.
