Amite – On January 4, 2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 16 near Dummyline Road in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 60-year-old Roderick E. Brumfield of Franklinton.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Brumfield was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on LA Hwy 16. At the same time, a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling westbound on LA Hwy 16. For reasons still under investigation, the Silverado crossed the centerline and struck the Equinox head-on.

Brumfield, who was properly restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Equinox, also properly restrained, suffered serious injuries. Among the four passengers in the Equinox, one was properly restrained, two juveniles were improperly secured in child safety seats, and one juvenile was unrestrained. All occupants of the Equinox sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were collected from both drivers for analysis.

Properly wearing a seat belt dramatically reduces the risk of injury or death in a crash. Louisiana law requires everyone in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, to be buckled up at all times. Seat belts save lives, and taking this simple step can make the difference between life and death. Parents and caregivers unsure about their child’s car seat installation can visit any Louisiana State Police Troop or contact the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission for the nearest fitting station. Ensuring proper use of car seats and booster seats helps save lives and prevent injuries. The Louisiana State Police urge motorists to follow traffic laws, avoid driving while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, and always ensure all occupants are properly restrained. If you witness hazardous driving, dial *LSP (*577).
